I am rebuilding my np231. does anyone know how wide the chain is? I have a 1998 jeep xj. I was told it could be 1 or 1.25 inch.

				NP231J - NP231 JEEP - 1" chain
NP231D - NP231 DODGE - 1.25" chain
You can install the 1.25" chain in the Jeep case as long as the Dodge sprockets are installed as well.

mmmm I don't mean to sound like a dummy, but I don't get the 6 pinion low range planetary. what is the difference between that in putting in a 4:1 low range in the transfer case? do you have more of a range of gears to pick from?

6 pinion planetary gears are double the strength of the stock np231j since they have a 3 pinion planetary gear. Still same gear ratio as 2.72:1.
While a 4:1 conversion for np231 will reduce gearing, they are not necessarily stronger. With that, I dont believe there is anyone that produces a 4:1 kit for the np231 anymore since they were notorious for grenading.
