92 CAT Removal ?
Hello, every one i know that this has probably been discuss a lot before, but here we go again i have a 92 jeep cherokee laredo 4.0 it has the OBI computer sysm. If i remove the catylic conveter will that hurt the engine or computer? i know i will probbaly lose some performance but i was wondering if by removing it would it cause the engine to run to lean or rich because of 02 not getting a correct reading? I only have one 02 sensor and it is not located on the cat itself. Any help would be appreciated

Re: 92 CAT Removal ?
Removing it will neither help nor harm the engine. (dyno tests show ~1hp real world difference with or without a cat)
OBDI has only 1 o2 sensor and it is before the cat anything you do after the o2 sensor won't bother the computer much.
If you have a sawzall and a welder, or a hacksaw and a ratchet you can replace it in your driveway.
I recommend universal cats because they cast 1/3 the price of a OE direct fit replacement and I weld all my exhaust anyway.
If you drive it on the street with no cat or a gutted cat you are breaking the law
Federal law prohibits removal or replacement of a properly functioning O.E. converter. Since yours rattles (and is damaged), replace it.

Re: 92 CAT Removal ?
Are you sure the noise is from inside the CAT and not from the heat shield? My girlfriends car was rattling bad.I thought it was the cat and AFTER removing it,I noticed the mfr tag came loose between the top of the heat shield and the body. A small cut in the shield and it came right out. MUCH cheaper
Just wish I looked at the top sooner

Re: 92 CAT Removal ?
Many of the converters Chrysler used in the '90's did this, the one in my jeep rattled like it had a ROCK! in it, and we had a Dodge Ram 1500, within a year or two in age of my Jeep, come in the shop making the EXACT same sound, the computer on my Jeep, '97 OBDII has never offered to set off the check engine light in the last 7 years running a "modified" cat, and if we ever get the smog check crap here it will pass the visual inspection.
You can get more power out of ANY engine!!!

Re: 92 CAT Removal ?
Yeah,I check the heat shield it look good but it does look like the noise is coming from the inside, i loosen the cat bolt and shake the cat a little and it sounded like I had some "Rocks" and some "Sand" in there. I am just very surprize that my computer didn't throw some kind of engine code, i mean i know its an OBI (The ATARI of engine computers) but still you would think i show something? plus it really started to run like crap. Well I guess it's off to get a new cat

Re: 92 CAT Removal ?
While you got the exhaust apart, make sure you dump all the converter bits out of the muffler.
Otherwise you'll have a clogged exhaust and will end up with a Jeep running like crap.
