wrong piston orientation on rods

Post by strokED »

I just got my pistons and rods back from the machine shop and noticed that they are oriented wrong (Arrow forward, oil squirt hole on the left). Should I attempt to have them remounted or are they fine to install as is? if they are fine as is, do install according to the piston dish and arrow or according to the oil squirt hole. FYI, they are reman stock 4.0 rods and 9.3:1 hypereutectic pistons made by KB, purchased from Clegg. Any help would be appreciated, thank you all!

Post a photo so we can see for ourselves but I suspect you'll need to have the pistons reversed.

I have already started disaster planning... I plan to call the machine shop on Monday to see what he thinks, I'm just concerned that he may not be able to remove the wrist pins without shattering them.

Based on what i found from previous forums posts, it may be fine to run or may not, the only other post I saw of someone running them was dishes backwards, oil squirt hole on the cam side.

Image
Not sure if the above link will work (kind of a young buck Forums were before my time)
In the image, the arrow is pointing left on top of the piston with the oil squirt hole facing the camera, installed this would not be cam shaft side like its supposed to be.

Image
In second image, you can see my other concern which is the chamfer on the top if the rod, one side is flat, the other has a chamfer. Would this be a problem?

Either way, like I said I'm gonna call the machine shop to see what he can do, Ill update when I know more.

Quick Update:

I stopped by the machine shop this morning to let him know the issue, he told me his book said to mount them with the stamped numbers on the drivers side. My remanufactured rods have the stamped numbers on the oil squirt side so this approach would be flawed...

He is going to attempt to remount them. Ill update again when I find out if he could remount them without shattering the pistons.

In my opinion it wouldn’t be worth risking damaging the piston trying to correct the orientation by removing them.

The piston dish is reverse mirror image of the combustion chamber putting the dish on the passenger side/spark plug side of the engine.

Many of the aftermarket rod bearings such as Clevite/M77 don’t have a V notch in the bearing, so therefore would not allow the factory oil squirt hole to be operational.

I appreciate the response! I dropped them at the machine shop on Monday to see if he could do it and haven't heard back... that is the exact thought i had on Monday but he was concerned about the chamfer on the big end of the rod. He said it would "Destroy" the engine if backwards.

hypothetically if he hasn't touched them yet, would it be better to but the dish backwards or the oil hole on the wrong side. the bearings I bought do have oil holes FYI.

Well 5 minutes later and he called me... He was able to remount them without shattering any. I am very happy and pleasantly surprised! Thank you all for the suggestions.

I am currently planning to stroke the daily driver on April 1st I will update with more info probably around then.

This all started with a $100 donor 4.2 from marketplace and here we are... thousands in... :rockout:
