The Story: 1981 AMC Eagle, 325k miles, gone through several 4.2l(258 cu in) rebuilds, along with every other mechanical thing on the car, ditched the 2 bbl Carter dripper 150k miles ago in favor of a JFI throttle body /engine management system. The JFI was an improvement over the carb, but no increase in HP. Started researching the different ways to build a new engine with increase in HP and overall performance. Taking advantage of the positive things with the 4.0 and 4.2 seemed like a good way to go. The first step for me was to install the Mopar MPi multi port system on the existing 4.2. WOW seems like a huge increase in performance. After considering several potential Stroker builds, went with Clegg engines in Utah for my machine work. I had good luck consulting with Tysin from Clegg in specking out a stroked engine design. I wanted good performance , but I need a daily driver. I supplied a wrecking yard 4.2 crank and 4.0 block with 7120 head , and had Clegg do the machine work. In the end, because of time constraints on my end, I just had Clegg assemble the long block and ship it back. In the mean time I had the Eagle pan (different pan than standard 4.0 pan) and motor mounts powder coated.
Eagle already had installed:
Mopar MPI multi port injection and engine management
Jeep T5 5 speed trans
New Process 242 Transfer case
Stroker Spec list:
4.0 block, decked .005 and bored .030 oversize
7120 head , ported, oversize valves, HP valve springs
KB 944 pistons, 4.0 rods, balanced as a set
New cam @0.05 215in/219 ex lift .484 in/ .480 ex
4.2 crank, balanced
Ford #24 injectors- ebay
Joe Gibbs racing 5/30 racing oil as break in oil
Got the engine installed last week and fired up. Scary Fast! Studded tires on all 4, very awesome in the snow and ice here in Montana.

Re: 1981 Eagle Stroker
Wow you are my new lover lmao. I'm putting a 4.7 in my 81 sx4. My biggest question is about the 242 linkage. Please pm me pics on the linkage and especially some measurements to where to put the shifter !!! I fit a spirit gt center counsel in mine so I definitely know I have to cut it for shifter clearance. Been debating on putting a 242 in for awhile.
